Water Quality Monitoring
Clark Fork Delta Station

The Clark Fork Delta lies where the Clark Fork River enters into Lake Pend Oreille. The lake’s main tributary, the Clark Fork River contributes 80% of the water to Lake Pend Oreille.
This river has its own water quality issues upstream in Montana related to mining and industry. Originating near the massive copper mine at Butte, MT, the river flows through Missoula, and then past the Smurfit-Stone pulp and paper mill. The mill closed in 2009, but concerns remain about toxic chemicals flushing into the river.
Other concerns revolve around the banks of the delta, which are susceptible to extensive erosion. The loss of soil is primarily a result of fluctuating water levels due to dam operations, and boat wakes can also contribute to the problem. This shoreline erosion leads to the loss of valuable wetlands and critical habitats for fish and wildlife. Restoration efforts were led by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and were completed during the summer of 2023.
